east side gallery.

you probably knew this, but the berlin wall, on the western side, was covered with graffiti art. it became a major tourist attraction during the time of the divided berlin, while the east side of the wall was kept blank. there are still large graffiti murals throughout the city, but there's a preserved section of the wall, which is periodically painted over and covered with new murals. it's called the East Side Gallery.

after we took the metro deep into the former east berlin and saw this on the side of an apartment building. soothing.

walking to the gallery.

see? we were really there.

this is a little hard to read, so if you can't: "I painted over the wall of shame so freedom is ashamed no more. inferno ruled too many years, until the people chose the light. i put my faith in you, berlin, and give you my colours bright." -Fulvio Pinna, Italy

"Many small people who in many small places do many small things that can alter the face of the world."

my favorite.

the roses represent a person who was killed trying to cross the wall in the years painted.

i want a turquoise trabi, if i was going to get one at all.

ryan's will be lime green, of course!

this is the remains of the entrance to the train station which deported elderly berlin jews to terezin.

tomorrow we're going to another food hall, like the one in paris, and harrod's which we went to in london on our honeymoon.
