took the midnight train going anywhere...

in true european fashion, we bought gigantic beers at the train station. czech beer is delicious. but we failed on lunch, obviously. some train stations are better than others...
like vienna! ryan got....

a wiener schnitzel the size of his head! look at that thing!

i have a salad. but the schnitzel is in great perspective here!

then we got on the midnight train. first, there are seats, like usual, that you can sit in for the first part of your trip. you get a little bottle of wine, a bottle of water, and a piece of fruit for the evening.

and there's a note in the bag saying that these bags were packed by a group dedicated to giving disabled people employment, so that's nice.

then you fold your bed down.

that's the tap. it's only for washing your face and hands. do not drink it. do not wash your teeth in it. it's a little scary.

that's the ladder to ryan's bunk. the night train saves time, and you get there while you're sleeping, which is nice. IF YOU CAN SLEEP. the train stopped every 15 minutes or so, which kept waking us up. plus, the bathroom was at the other end of the hall, so you had to put your shoes on and stuff.

but in the morning, this was outside the window:

and everything i've ever heard about how the light in italy is different than any where else in the world was true. so, so beautiful.

you get to order a breakfast composed of six things on the train. this is what we got:

that's cheese, butter, sliced meat, rolls, a pear, 2 coffees and a juice. not too bad. plus, we were in venice. how can you complain??
