city cooking....

so, i really really like to cook. i was happy we were going to rent this apartment because it's a chance to slow down a bit, and not feel so very touristy for the whole 2.5 months we're gone. and it was a great idea, because it also allows me to cook, which i like a lot, and also save money and not always eat restaurant food. (i mean, one must balance the clotted cream...)

the kitchen is pretty well equipped for a city apartment, though there's not a huge variety of tools, and you have to make do. but i enjoy rising to a challenge:

first we went to the dutch grocery store, which was challenging in itself, as i don't speak dutch very well (or at all). luckily i managed to figure out how to find the stuff to make tomato sauce and pasta. we'll start small...
yeah, the wok, and then 2 very small pots, but then i found another 2 later, so this could have been done differently. regardless, it worked.

close up on dutch ingredients.

and the finished product: spaghetti bolognese, rocket salad and carrots and snow peas for my little bunny. yummy, and not only cheaper than a restaurant, cheaper than making this in reno too. nice.

you maybe can't tell-- but-- our lamp is red. and we're only 3 blocks from the red light district. so i try not to sit in the window after dark. unless ryan loses everything in poker, in which case: back-up plan! (this is a joke, mom.)

Day 2: potatoes with shallots, green beans with red peppers, and chicken for ryan, and cheesy bread for me. (I have to; it's too good not to eat).

wok-roasted potatoes. the shallots burnt a little. live and learn.

yum. this hoegaarden was 0.65 euro. that's an unbelievable price. i was very happy.

wok green beans and red pepper.

old amsterdam cheese for me, and chicken thighs for ryan.

finished.

yes, this was yummy.

and then we can also eat our own breakfast. the fruit here is so good, and cheaper than nevada. yay.

and another day of breakfast.

come visit, we're making pot roast tomorrow.
