the reason for travel agents (or pre-planning...)

okay. so here's the story about why we didn't go to england, because i know some people (chad... and, mostly me) were excited about seeing royal wedding stuff. we found out that with our eurorail passes, the ferry from amsterdam to newcastle is 25% off, and since it's an overnight ferry, it's also a hotel night each way. so we decided to add it, and figured we'd figure it out when we got here.

we made some easy-to-refund hotel reservations in newcastle, and planned to take the train from paris to amsterdam, with about an hour and half in amsterdam to find the ferry before it sailed. the train between paris and amsterdam requires reservations, and we learned on our honeymoon that they might be sold out the day of the train. so we merrily made our reservations, and went to paris.

the day before we were to leave, i looked up the ferry dock. it's either a train, then bus, then tram ride which would be around 2 hours, or a very expensive cab ride, which would get us there in time, but cost around 150 euros. then we realized that the dock in newcastle is also not in newcastle proper, and seems to be the same situation. then we realized that we'd have to do the whole thing all over again to come back to amsterdam before we continue our train trip to germany and beyond.

it just didn't seem worth it, is all. so we cancelled the hotel and the ferry and found a great rate at the NH Doelen Hotel, so we're back in holland. now we can do keukenhof gardens, and a return trip to haarlem, and possibly a day in brugges, so we're for it.

only the internet is crazy expensive here, so blogging is a little hard. might be sporadic for a few days, but i'll keep you up to date if i can!
